Basics

NAME: Colin
AGE: 27
NATIONALITY: Fereldan
RACE: Human
OCCUPATION: Healer
TITLE/RANK: Healer/apothecary
HEIGHT: 5'10"
BUILD: Slightly underfed
HAIR: Dark brown
EYES: Dark brown
SKIN: Brown
BEARING: Shy
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES:  Very soft-spoken.  His accent is mainly an upper-middle-class Fereldan with certain sounds that smack strongly of lower class (a bit like your basic London accent).   He has a small steel hoop earring in the cartilage of his right ear and a (usually hidden) tattoo of a saffron crocus on his upper arm.
Status

Presently a spirit healer/apothecary stationed in the Gallows.  Sells lyrium as part of his duties.

Lives in Hightown in Alexandrie de la Fontaine's private flat.

Reputation

Little is generally known about Colin's past, except that he was from a poor family in Denerim and he's a damn good cook.  Previously, he ran the Inquisition general goods store in the Gallows.  He is a mage, though he doesn't wear robes.  Known to be a gentle soul, very shy and often difficult to read.

He is known to run Darktown's free clinic and is a very good potion-maker.

Kinloch Hold

Mages (and templars) from Kinloch Hold between 9:29 and the fall of the Circles may have seen him there.  He arrived at the Circle at the age of eleven and was immediately known to be very shy--more so even than typical, which owed to his natural shyness on top of the shock everyone experiences.  He was quiet and introverted, but enjoyed the company of the friends he had.  He was often in the company of the older apprentice Audra Penrose, and her departure to another Circle was difficult for Colin.  Shortly after, at age seventeen, he became suddenly silent, withdrawn from his friends and nigh-on impossible to speak with or get a straight answer from.  He got into exactly two fistfights with other apprentices before someone spoke to him about it.  After that, he was often in the kitchen, cooking.  He was Harrowed at age twenty-one, his Harrowing being put off so long due to his concerning behavior.

During Uldred's rebellion, he was twelve, and after the fighting ended, was found hiding inside a wall, delirious from dehydration and unable to walk.  There has been no lasting physical damage from that time.

Hooks

-Healer/apothecary.

-Sometimes cooks lunch for his coworkers in the infirmary.

-He's a mage from Kinloch Hold who kept it secret for several years after the fall of the Circles.

-He sells lyrium, officially and legally.

Colin is an empath. Certain things strengthen his abilities, and while he cannot turn them off, we can certainly arrange for there to be other things that hamper them. Thus far, his psychic ability is limited to empathy and some weak telekinesis. He is able to sense the emotions of others, can tell if someone is lying or telling the truth, and has the ability to make people feel somewhat comforted simply by listening (the last of which I will never put in my own tags, since it would be godmodding, but it's an option for you to play with in your tags if you like). None of these are compulsory for our RP, though. If you'd rather pass on all this, we can say your character has very strong psychic defenses, or a confusing sort of aura. To be clear: none of this is mind-reading. Colin won't know why your character feels the way they do unless he is told. Heavy rain or the presence of the creek can help him sense nuance in emotions, but he's not a telepath. If you have any questions, hit me up!

COLIN KEANE
I just bake things.
NORTHCLIFF PASS

PLAYER
NAME: Tori
DISCORD: toriangeli#4626
PLURK: [plurk.com profile] toriangeli
TIMEZONE: Eastern US
OVERVIEW
A shy and mild-mannered baker who has lived in Northcliff Pass his entire life. Tries very hard to be as inoffensive and nonthreatening as possible, and considers himself uninteresting. The village, however, remembers when his oldest sister proved to be a Profane. Shame about their house burning down that same night, killing both his parents and two of his sisters.

PERSONALITY
Colin's natural painful shyness has been at odds with an equally painful loneliness since his family, excluding his next-oldest sister, was killed. He has difficulty reaching out and is prone to panic. Parts of him haven't grown beyond the age of eleven, while other parts are old beyond his years. Once you do get him talking, though, he bonds very quickly and is reluctant to let go.

Feels more than he thinks, thinks more than he listens, listens more than he talks. Difficult to aggravate, but judges people more quickly than he lets on.

ABILITIES
Colin is an excellent baker and cook, owns and cares for numerous chickens, speaks Aguilan fluently, and can read and write. He would have you believe that's the extent of it.

Born with the Vice. His sign is Cancer, so he is predisposed toward water magics and has some raw empathic ability. Due to having the Vice, he also has had to develop a good poker face and the ability to lie quickly and easily.

IC Information

Name/Alias: Colin Keane
Age: 25
Occupation: Baker
Born with The Vice?: Yes
If yes, do they use it?: Yes

Appearance: Long dark hair and brown skin, has a hoop earring in the cartilage of his left ear. 5'10", looks fit and trim but slightly underfed. Demeanor is shy and stoic, and he doesn't typically talk much.

History: Born and raised in town as part of a large family. At the age of ten, he accidentally caused crocuses to grow and bloom in the middle of the winter. It was conspicuous, and there were numerous witnesses, so his oldest sister, Marina, acted like she was the one who did it. Rumor spread fast, and that night, someone set the family's house on fire. He survived because his parents insisted that he, being the youngest, be the first to be boosted out of a window. His next-oldest sister followed him, but the roof collapsed then and the rest of the family perished.

They were taken in by Emery as fosters. Still, afraid to trust in a seemingly secure future, Colin apprenticed to the town's baker while his sister, Camilla, sewed shirts for a living. He always made sure to project an air of innocence, though it wasn't easy to win the trust of the village after what happened. Camilla married someone outside the village at first opportunity, having found it too difficult to assimilate given her more combative nature and desire to defend her sister. Not even she knows it was Colin who bloomed the flowers, nor how since then he has discovered the entirely uncontrollable gift of empathy. It's a secret Colin intends to take to his grave.

Since then, he has been the humble village baker, having an utter lack of ambition except to cook good food, a skill passed down to him from his mother as well as the previous master baker.

Personality: Colin is mild-mannered and more prone to listening than talking. He is, however, a very active listener with a light hand at engaging people. It works well for him in business, but often abandons him whenever conversation gets personal. He loved to be around people once, and he longs to be more social than he is, but the incident from his childhood has given him a moderate degree of social anxiety. He hates his Vice, and won't use it for fear of being discovered.

He loves nature and beautiful or flavorful things. He is prone to being judgmental often and passive-aggressive if pressed, but loathes conflict and will almost always avoid it, whatever the cost.

Despite his mild manner and easy, gentle smile, he is quick-witted and extremely resourceful. Those who underestimate him based on his apparent fragility are bound to be surprised by his ability to adapt and endure. He survived first the fire, then the suspicions of the village who murdered his family. He has spent more than half his lifetime living with his anxiety issues and learning how to cope, while building a reputation and persona that will allow him to survive despite his Vice. It would be easy for people to see him as some sort of amateur in over his head.

He is no amateur.

Abilities: Magic: Empath, both passive and touch. Can grow flowers, apparently, but he's not sure how. Able to scry. All his abilities are stronger during rain or snow or near water. He's an excellent cook and baker and not a terrible artist.

Fully bilingual, thanks to his Aguilan mother, who taught him and his sisters.

Can read and write thanks to being raised partially by Emery.

Reputation: A quiet, sweet guy who had a single Profane sister who died when she was discovered and the family's house was set on fire. Seen every morning in the chapel, praying, though he doesn't tend to speak much about religion. Makes delicious food, lives above the bakery. He and another sister were fosterlings of Emery's family.

Name: Warden Colin Amell
Door: Left

Canon: Dragon Age
Canon Point: Post-Ostagar

Age: 21
Appearance: Here!

History: Link! With the clarification that I am playing Colin as the youngest of the children of Revka Amell, who disappeared. Her husband took the children away from Kirkwall and was not heard from again. I am headcanoning that he took his children to a small Antivan village near where he grew up. Colin was raised as a working-class boy with strong connections to his Antivan roots. His magic manifested at the age of ten, at which time he was taken to the Circle. He also ratted out Jowan to First Enchanter Irving.

Personality:

Colin is mild-mannered and more prone to listening than talking. He is, however, a very active listener with a light hand at engaging people. It works well for him in diplomacy, but often abandons him whenever conversation gets personal. He loves to be around people, he longs to be more social than he is, but anxiety gets in the way. Surviving in the Circle is not easy, and he is only newly Harrowed and was prone to being bullied.

His relationship with his own magic is not great. He has never known anything else, but he knows it has only brought him trouble and pain, as well as the fear that he would not measure up and would be made Tranquil. Nonetheless, he has difficulty relating to non-mages and is, as a result of his confinement, someone socially awkward. He is shy, and more to the point, deeply cynical. His experience in the Circle tells him that people do what they must to survive, even if it means screwing over other people. He does not trust anyone to have his back but himself, unless there is some manner of self-interest involved. If he is useful to others, they will protect him, and so he makes himself useful.

He loves nature and beautiful or flavorful things. His life in the Circle was grey, and in nature there are millions of colors. He loves to cook, especially because so much Fereldan food is terrible, and did a lot of work in the kitchens in the Circle. He carries his own personal vial of dried garlic and chili spice everywhere he goes, sprinkling it (or piling it) on food he finds too bland.

He is often ineffectual. His anxiety can manifest as anger, if triggered by a person, albeit anger he has difficulty following through on. If threatened or insulted, he will often simply seethe back at them. Survival instinct developed in the Tower shuts him down, his gaze falls away, and he petrifies. He is angrier at himself than anyone. But not angry enough to move.

His sense of humor is dry, often quietly spoken as an aside rather than a performance. He is deeply empathetic but hesitant to act. He listens actively and is usually polite. He treasures his friendships dearly. He is bisexual but has never been in a romantic relationship, only fooled around a little with other apprentices.

Despite his mild manner and easy, gentle smile, he is quick-witted and determined. Those who underestimate him based on his apparent fragility are bound to be surprised by his ability to adapt and endure. He survived his Circle, on his own. He has spent half his lifetime living with his anxiety issues and learning how to cope. He clawed his way out from under the abuses of Templars with his cunning, not with force. It would be easy for people to see him as some sort of amateur in over his head.

He is no amateur.

Powers and Abilities: Spirit, creation, and some entropy magic. He is well-versed in herbalism as well.
Inventory: A small jar of spices, a pendant with the blood from his Joining, his Warden uniform.

Interests: I'm hoping to be able to play a regular Circle mage with a fairly unsurprising Circle mage background. I want to play how it has shaped his life, how he is dealing with it, and whether or not he will fully embrace being a mage now that he is free. I really want a non-combatant mage who struggles with his gift. And I really, really want to have a character who can get involved in the diplomacy/connections side of things.

CHARACTER

Name: Colin
Canon/OC: OC
Journal: [personal profile] keenly
Race: Human
Nationality: Fereldan
Occupation: Merchant
Division: Diplomacy
Mage or Not: Mage
Age: 24

History

Colin was born in Denerim to lower-class parents. His mother was Antivan and ran a food stall in the market district. His father was a docks worker. Colin was the second-youngest of five children. His magic manifested when he was eleven and he blasted several customers across the distance of fifteen feet when one was threatening his mother. Injuries were sustained, and one of the customers broke their neck and died. A Templar was there to witness. Without so much as a word, the Templar grabbed the boy and dragged him to his superior officer to tell him what happened. Colin was taken immediately to Kinloch Hold, not even permitted to see his family before leaving.

Soon the Blight came. Colin survived Uldred's massacre by hiding inside a damaged wall. He spent days and nights there, unable to lie down, sitting on the crumbling clay interior with no food and only whatever water he could conjure for himself with ice spells or collect from condensation. When the slaughter ended and the Templars found him, he was too weak to stand up and desperately feverish. He had severe agoraphobia for years after, and it never fully went away.

As a student, he was talented in spirit and entropy magics, though by no means a potential spirit medium. He was an excellent cook, and he started to work in the kitchen during his free time. His talent for math and cooking served him well in potion-making.

He was seventeen when one of the Templars began stopping and harassing him. He endured months of sexual abuse before the local contraband lyrium dealer was ratted out. The man desperately needed someone to buy his supply before the Templars could search his quarters and find it, and sold it to Colin before being transferred to another Circle.

Having the contraband lyrium business was right up Colin's alley, and he found that dealing lyrium protected him from further abuse. It wasn't a perfect setup--some threatened to turn him in if he did not give them better prices or a better quality, but his operation managed never to be discovered before the Circles fell.

When the Circles were dissolved, Colin sold his remaining lyrium and traveled to Denerim in hopes of reuniting with his family. He learned upon his arrival that the darkspawn had killed the entire family many years before. He got work aboard a merchantman as a purser and found that life at sea was not so bad. Once his contract was up, he invested in quality fabrics to trade. Tried trading in Denerim, but found his agoraphobia gave him issues adjusting. He was able to send some lyrium shipments to the rebel mages, still having his contact in Orzammar.

He seeks the Inquisition now that the war is over, hoping for a community of other mages and a sense of purpose he can cling to even on days when he can't set foot outdoors.

Personality

Colin is mild-mannered and more prone to listening than talking. He is, however, a very active listener with a light hand at engaging people. It works well for him in business, but often abandons him whenever conversation turns to his personal life. He loves to be around friends, he longs to be more social than he is, but social anxiety gets in the way. Large, open spaces and crowds feel unsafe to him, and while small spaces don't feel totally safe, they are safer. Complex childhood post-traumatic stress leaves him at a loss when trying to regulate his own emotions, which sometimes overwhelm him, compounding the shame if it is witnessed by anyone else.

His relationship with his own magic is on the rocks. He never wanted it. It has only brought him trouble and pain. If he can help it, he won't use it, and he certainly doesn't tell anyone about it. Nonetheless, he has difficulty relating to non-mages. His life experience is not like that of "mundanes," and he longs for friends who understand him.

He loves nature and beautiful or flavorful things. His life in Denerim was brown, in the Circle it was grey, and in nature there are millions of colors. He loves to cook, especially because so much Fereldan food is terrible. He carries his own personal vial of dried garlic and chili spice everywhere he goes, sprinkling it (or piling it) on food he finds too bland.

He is deeply empathetic. He listens actively. He is polite, although occasionally slips backward into a lower-class way of speaking. He treasures his friendships dearly. He is pansexual but has never been in a romantic relationship, nor had consensual sex, being extremely gun-shy and anxious of both. This is not to say he is not curious, only that his molestation in his teenage years has taken its toll. Any romantic interest will have to be patient with him.

Despite his mild manner and easy, gentle smile, he is quick-witted and determined. Those who underestimate him based on his apparent fragility are bound to be surprised by his ability to adapt and endure. He survived a near-annulment of his Circle, on his own, when he was twelve years old. He has spent half his lifetime living with his terror of the world and learning how to cope. He clawed his way out from under the abuses of Templars with his cunning, not with force. It would be easy for people to see him as some sort of amateur in over his head.

He is no amateur.

Opinions & Affiliations

The Chantry: He's having a long and turbulent crisis of faith and has lost all trust in the Chantry.
The Qun: Fucked up.
Mage/Templar War: Pro-freedom, very anti-Templar and anti-Circle.
Elves: Some of his good friends in the Circle were elves. He related to them better than upper- and middle-class humans.
Dwarves: Intriguing.
Qunari: Tal-Vashoth are okay in theory but he's never seen one and would probably keep his distance if he did.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Colin is a harrowed Circle mage with a talent for spirit/telekinesis and creation magic. He is quick-witted, cunning, and adaptable. He is good at making connections, good at determining who is advantageous to connect with, and has a light but effective touch in matters of negotiation and empathy. He speaks Antivan, his mother's tongue. He is very talented at mathematics, which lent itself well to potion-making in the Circle, and bookkeeping. He's a great cook and still has a source in Orzammar for small shipments of lyrium (which is like coming to a giant pharmacy with a heroin dealer as a contact, really, but it's there).

He has social anxiety and a degree of agoraphobia, though he has days when he can function nearly as normal. For the most part, he has difficulty leaving his house or room and he rarely initiates contact with strangers. Professional interactions are easier because it feels more like a recitation than an interaction. He wields denial like a pro and shuts off certain advantages, such as being a mage, locking it away and pretending it's not there. He is prone to self-sabotage, longing for happiness and yet terrified of it. Under few circumstances will he speak of his own achievements, disliking the attention that comes with acclaim.

Inventory

-Several changes of ordinary commoner clothing.
-Books, pens, and a portable writing desk.
-Various salable goods.
-A small shipment of refined lyrium.

Motivation

Colin wants a purpose, and wants to help save the world. He wants to be around people while still being able to retreat safely into a tower on bad days. He's willing to offer himself as a negotiator and as an interpreter of the Antivan language, and to set up as the local Inquisition merchant, selling goods to Inquisition members at a discount.
