The Brewer's wife had her labor. Six babies.

Six? [An owlish blink. This seems to wake him up more than the coffee.] Um. You know I'm going to want to hear everything. Did she survive? Did the babies?

[ She nods with the grim satisfaction of one who's seen many, many things. ]

All of 'em. Blasted miracle, frankly, but she's built like a druffalo to start with and already had one before these. Was expecting maybe twins, but...

[ She trailed off, getting a far off look in her eye. ] You ever have to crouch under someone to catch a baby when they've been at it for 13 hours? Time ain't even real at that point, it's just shit and piss and babies all the way down.

I've had to catch from underneath, sure, but usually when it's just...more comfortable for her. Though I have had to go in with tools when she got too tired. And once I got Sid's help removing a baby with magically assisted surgery.

I would've liked magical assistance, but I've done twins before. Didn't think much of it going in.

[ She lifts up her hands to show him. ]

Tools are well and good, but sometimes it's best to just reach in and grab. Only time I'm glad to be this small.

Yeah, my hands are too big for that. And the baby's usually too slippery. So how quick did they come once the first was born?

Second one came easy enough. No more than 15 minutes by my count. Third was 12 and fuck all if I know the rest. Reckon I'll have notes for you after I've collected myself and you can come up with me to check on 'em. Don't think their mother would mind if her healing got sped up a bit.

[ Because birthing that many does leave a body in a state. ]

Bede. If they gave him a surname, it'd likely be Tanner. I know you'll be busy, like, so don't fret about it. But if you've time, they keep records, don't they?

[There's a pause.]

Bede? [Another pause, then a little sound.] Red hair, like yours?

[poleaxed]

You knew him, like? Were he still an arsehole?

Oh yes.

[poleaxed]

Good, I'm glad he's stuck to family tradition.

...Didn't beat on you, did he?

[Bede was never violent when he was twelve, but who knows who he's become, or what other family traditions he's taken up.]

N-no, he didn't beat on anyone that I know of, but he found ways. Didn't take any interest in me, though.

[poleaxed]

Good. Little fucker. [Her relief is audible.] I were always protecting him; he had a mouth little.. mmh.

[A moment to deal with this information. A breath. So he lived that long.]

D'you remember him at all, after the- the Blight?

Somewhat? He did survive, though. I remember because I think he actually got worse after. I don't know what came of him, though. Seems like I don't remember him after some point or other, but that could mean almost anything.

I'm no authority in any way, but I am another spirit healer and it would be good to have someone to speak with about it. I've only been doing it about two and a half years.

[Whenever she does find the time, Colin is either in the infirmary or the apothecary across from it. He's spent the time between playing all the terrible things that could happen in his mind, lecturing himself for playing all the terrible things that could happen in his mind because that's unhealthy, and trying to logically convince the part of him that can be socially confident during professional interactions that this qualifies.

Regardless, he's stoic enough that when he sees a new face, she mostly sees him looking sort of blank.]
